Bhutan Migrates National ID System to Ethereum Blockchain

The Kingdom of Bhutan is moving its national identity system to the Ethereum blockchain, allowing nearly 800,000 citizens to securely verify their identities and access government services.

The transition marks Bhutan’s third blockchain-based ID system, following earlier implementations on Polygon and Hyperledger Indy. The integration with Ethereum has already been completed, and the full migration of citizen credentials is expected to be finished by early 2026.

The announcement was made during an official launch ceremony attended by Bhutan’s Prime Minister Tshering Tobgay, Crown Prince Jigme Namgyel Wangchuk, Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin, and Ethereum Foundation President Aya Miyaguchi.

Miyaguchi called the move a “world-first,” praising Bhutan’s commitment to self-sovereign identity and digital innovation.

Bhutan joins a small but growing list of countries exploring blockchain-based ID systems, including Brazil and Vietnam.
