Sony Launches Ethereum Network Soneium, with Games on the Horizon

Sony has officially launched Soneium, its Ethereum-based scaling network, marking a significant step in the company’s blockchain ambitions. Developed by Sony BLS—a Singapore-based subsidiary formed in partnership with Startale Labs—Soneium is being positioned as a platform to bring blockchain technology to a wider audience.

While PlayStation could potentially leverage Soneium for digital assets in gaming, Sony has not announced any direct integration. A spokesperson stated that while blockchain presents exciting possibilities for gaming, there are no specific updates regarding PlayStation at this time.

Currently, Soneium hosts a variety of early-stage blockchain games, including Derby Race, a Telegram-based horse racing game, and OverTrip, a battle royale shooter with crypto-based staking elements. However, none of these games are directly affiliated with Sony or Startale Labs, as Soneium remains an open, permissionless network.

Sony has previously explored blockchain applications in gaming through patent filings, including one for ”super-fungible tokens,” which would enable players to track and trade in-game assets. Despite this, no PlayStation console games currently feature front-facing crypto elements.

The launch of Soneium comes as blockchain gaming continues to evolve, with industry giants exploring the intersection of Web3 and traditional gaming experiences. While some studios are integrating blockchain elements, others, such as Rockstar Games, have maintained restrictions on crypto and NFTs.

Sony BLS has stated that Soneium could serve as a technical backbone for various industries, including gaming, film, and music. Whether PlayStation titles will eventually integrate with the network remains to be seen, but Soneium’s launch signals Sony’s growing interest in blockchain’s role in digital entertainment.
