Ford, Toyota Lead Blockchain Innovation as Autonomous Vehicle Progress Slows
Ford and Toyota are doubling down on blockchain technology, solidifying their leadership in the field with a surge of patent filings in Q2 2024, even as advancements in driverless car technology slow.
According to data from GlobalData Patent Analytics and Just Auto, Ford and Toyota filed a combined total of 43 blockchain-related patents in Q2 2024, leading the industry in innovation. Ford significantly increased its blockchain filings from just three in Q1 to 14 in Q2, while Toyota raised its patent count from 25 to 29 during the same period. This surge came as the overall number of blockchain-related patents in the automotive sector declined from the previous quarter.
The top five companies in the space, including Ford and Toyota, recorded 29, 14, seven, six, and six patent filings, respectively, highlighting the automakers’ dominant position.
Blockchain for Automotive Applications
Ford and Toyota’s recent blockchain patents aim to address a variety of challenges in the automotive sector. Ford, for instance, filed a patent that could revolutionize vehicle ownership through blockchain, using smart contracts to automate and secure title transfers. The system would provide an immutable record of vehicle ownership changes in real-time, simplifying transactions for buyers and sellers.
Similarly, Toyota is developing a blockchain-based system to manage NFTs linked to its vehicles. This system would ensure that vehicles held in dealer inventory are accurately recorded on the blockchain, providing real-time transparency for all parties involved.
Driverless Technology Shifts Focus
Both automakers have adjusted their strategies, prioritizing advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS) over fully autonomous vehicles. Despite continued optimism, the driverless car industry has faced significant hurdles, and the timeline for widespread deployment of robotaxis remains uncertain.
However, the growing maturity of blockchain technology offers a potential advantage for Ford and Toyota, even in the driverless vehicle space. The integration of blockchain-based city infrastructure could play a critical role in enabling future autonomous vehicle ecosystems.
As the industry pivots toward blockchain innovation, Ford and Toyota’s leadership positions them to capitalize on emerging technologies in the evolving automotive landscape.
