Binance, one of the world’s largest cryptocurrency exchanges, is recovering from a major cyberattack in which hackers stole around $6.3 billion in digital assets, making it the largest cryptocurrency theft ever reported.

The attack took place on October 29, when hackers gained access to Binance’s hot wallets, which are digital wallets connected to the internet and used to process cryptocurrency transactions.

According to Binance, an early investigation found that hackers may have gained access through a compromised employee laptop. However, the company later discovered other security breaches and is still investigating exactly how the attack happened.

Following the incident, Binance temporarily stopped cryptocurrency withdrawals while its security team worked to prevent further losses and protect customer funds.

Binance Promises to Cover All Losses

Binance has assured users that their funds are safe and that the company will cover the stolen assets using its emergency protection fund and its own money.

By November 1, the exchange said it had replaced around 95% of the affected assets, with the remaining 5% involving cryptocurrencies that are harder to buy in large amounts.

Binance also confirmed that withdrawals had started reopening in stages after additional security checks.

Meanwhile, Binance has been working with law enforcement agencies, blockchain security companies and other cryptocurrency businesses to track the stolen funds.

Around $3 billion in stolen digital assets has been frozen, preventing hackers from moving those funds while recovery efforts continue.

North Korean Hackers Linked to the Attack

The FBI has linked the attack to TraderTraitor, a hacking group associated with North Korea. The group has previously been connected to other major cryptocurrency thefts.

Investigators are monitoring the movement of stolen assets as they try to prevent the hackers from transferring or hiding the funds through cryptocurrency networks.

The incident has also raised fresh concerns about the security of cryptocurrency exchanges and how companies protect large amounts of customer money.

Following the attack, Binance reported that customers withdrew a net $3.64 billion from the platform during the initial withdrawal period after services resumed.

Despite the large withdrawals, Binance said activity was beginning to stabilize as it continued restoring normal operations.

The company plans to publish a detailed investigation report explaining how the attack happened and what steps it will take to prevent similar incidents.

The record-breaking hack highlights the growing security challenges facing the cryptocurrency industry as digital assets become more widely used around the world.
