October 16, 2026 — Deutsche Bank is preparing to launch its first digital asset custody service within weeks, marking a major step into the cryptocurrency sector.

According to Gerald Podobnik, co-head of the bank’s corporate banking division, the service will initially launch in Germany, with plans to expand into major Asian financial hubs in 2027.

The platform will first support leading cryptocurrencies, including Bitcoin (BTC) and Ethereum (ETH), before introducing services that allow institutional clients to transfer funds between traditional currencies and stablecoins.

Deutsche Bank also intends to develop tokenized deposits and support blockchain-based financial instruments, such as digital bonds.

The initiative is part of the bank’s broader strategy to achieve 8% compound annual growth in corporate banking by 2028.

Podobnik emphasized that blockchain technology and tokenization are becoming increasingly important to the global financial system. Rather than replacing traditional banking, these technologies are expected to complement existing financial services.

Why it matters: Deutsche Bank’s entry into crypto custody highlights growing institutional adoption of digital assets and reinforces the expanding role of blockchain technology in traditional finance.
