Argentina’s La Libertad Avanza party, led by President Javier Milei, has won the country’s midterm elections, reinforcing his push for free-market reforms and positioning him as a leading contender in the 2027 presidential race.
With nearly 99% of votes counted, Milei’s party secured 40.68% of the national vote, defeating the long-dominant Peronist party, according to local outlet La Nación. The victory included a key win in the Buenos Aires province, a region that has traditionally supported the Peronists.
The result marks a sharp turnaround from September, when Milei’s party suffered a major loss in the same province. Since then, Argentina has signed a $20 billion currency swap deal with the United States, a move aimed at strengthening economic ties despite ongoing domestic uncertainty.
While the Peronists still hold a majority in Congress, analysts say the midterm outcome cements Milei’s status as a frontrunner for the October 2027 presidential election.
A former economist, Milei has focused on reducing inflation, cutting state intervention, and promoting free-market policies. Under his leadership, Argentina moved to legalize contracts denominated in Bitcoin (BTC) and other cryptocurrencies in December 2023.
Even so, public opinion has soured. Polls from Zuban Córdoba, a center-left research group, show Milei’s approval rating dropped from 47.3% in November to 41.6% in March, with 63.2% of Argentines now viewing him negatively. Critics note, however, that the polling firm is known for its opposition to libertarian and far-right movements.
